Step back to the past and trace the century-old journey of an explorer at the special exhibit now on display at the McNay Art Museum! This incredible collection, entitled Captain Seth Eastman's Journey with A Sketchbook: Down the Mississippi, is part of the McNay’s celebration of San Antonio’s 300th anniversary.

This historic show is organized as series of exhibitions of the drawings of Captain Seth Eastman, a West Point-trained draftsman who traveled to Texas in the late 1840s. Through his stunning sketchbook, visitors will follow Eastman’s journey down the Mississippi to New Orleans, across the Gulf of Mexico to Matagorda Bay, then up to San Antonio and the Texas Hill Country.

Eastman’s drawings of the Alamo and other San Antonio missions are famous and widely reproduced, and this show introduces his lesser-known depictions of the riverscape, steamboats, cities, and settlements, giving contemporary viewers a vivid sense of what it would have been like to travel down the Mississippi in the mid-19th century. This is the first time in years that so many of the drawings will have been on display to the public. An interactive map in the gallery will enable visitors to follow Eastman’s journey using excerpts from his journal as well as historical and modern-day photos of locations he sketched. It’s a one-of-a-kind look at the past, so be sure to catch this educational show!

Community interaction is an important part of life, which is why Oxford at Estonia Apartments in San Antonio, Texas is urging you to join in the all of the excitement at this event!
