Spanish-speaking comedian Sofia Niño de Rivera is a trailblazer in Latin American comedy. As one of Mexico City’s top stand-up performers and the first woman to be given a Spanish-language Netflix comedy special, De Rivera is a force to be reckoned with onstage. Now, De Rivera brings her special blend of self-deprecating humor to San Antonio’s Majestic Theatre on Friday, August 17th.
A former publicist, Sofia Niño de Rivera has found her place within Mexican and Latin American pop culture. The Mexico City native is a cast member on Club de Cuervos, a Spanish-language comedy-drama series on Netflix. She also starred in a comedy special on the same platform titled Sofía Niño de Rivera: Expuesta ("Exposed"), released in 2016. In March 2017, De Rivera appeared on a special episode of the United States talk show Conan titled “Conan Without Borders: Made in Mexico.”
De Rivera is highly regarded throughout her community, and has been called “a leading exponent of stand-up comedy in Mexico and Latin America.” She was named Mexico City’s Woman of the Year by Chilango in 2016.
